Private Piano Teacher & Vocal Coach

MUSIC LESSONS

Piano Lessons

The most versatile instrument out there! I offer private, one-on-one piano instruction that is both fun and effective. My teaching methods focus on helping children and adults learn to love the piano and become fluent in the language of music though a mix of music theory, piano technique, inspiring repertoire, and lots of laughter! This, along with twice yearly recitals, ensures that we build a strong foundation for a lifetime of musicianship. (for students ages 4-100)

Voice Lessons

I believe that every person can sing and use their voice to help other humans feel seen and heard through song. I work with voice students to help them both find AND love their own voice. We do this by developing good, healthy singing habits, learning to apply a singer’s breath, and exploring the songs themselves as story tellers. By learning about a singer’s own style and strengths, we will utilize a variety of music styles and genres along with various performance opportunities to build skill and confidence. (for students ages 9-100)

Piano for Early Beginners (4-6)

I began my teaching career in piano education for young beginners ages 4 -6 years old. I love working with this age group and am an expert in building not only a solid foundation for life-long music-making but I also encourage personal creativity, build confidence and help little musicians discover their unique musicality. I utilize methods like Music For Little Mozarts and Faber My First Piano Adventures to introduce age-appropriate music concepts combined with lots of warmth, encouragement and fun! (for students ages 4-6)

Piano for Singers

Singers and songwriters need to learn to accompany themselves and piano is the most useful, even if it isn’t the most practical! I will teach you to play using chords so that you never have to hire help in order to showcase your awesome voice and can more expertly craft songs that other humans will connect with! (for students ages 10-100)

Vocal & Performance Coaching

Experienced singers will learn how to improve and maximize vocal health, choose repertoire that shows off their talent and select audition pieces. They will also hone their performance skills through intentional singing, will learn microphone technique, stage presence and how to engage their audience effectively. Most singers will also learn to accompany themselves in order to take full advantage of performance opportunities. (for students ages 14-100)

Both of my kids have been studying voice with Gyllian for the last few years. I have been amazed at their progress across all areas, not just their vocal technique and range, but also their confidence getting up in front of people. Gyllian is a wonderful, compassionate, encouraging teacher and I cannot recommend her enough!

— Ally H.

Gyllian is everything you would want in a music teacher! She is enthusiastic, joyful, patient, and encouraging. She has worked with our teen son over the past year and has really helped him both improve his technique and gain more confidence. She also organizes beautiful recitals giving her students something to strive for and a chance to demonstrate what they've been working on. We feel lucky to have found Gyllian!

You have questions

I have answers

  • Private Lessons are $100 per hour & billed monthly on the first of each month. I offer 60-minute & 45-minute lessons.

    $100 per 60-minute lesson

    $75 per 45-minute lesson

Monthly charges are based on 4 lessons in each month. So if there are 5 Mondays in a particular month and your lessons are on Mondays from 4-5pm, your charge will be $400 on the 1st of that month and you’ll have the 5th Monday off, unless you have a makeup lessons to use or would like to pay for an additional lesson.

YOUNG BEGINNERS (ages 4-6 only) generally begin with 30-minute lessons. An introductory lesson is $50 and the lessons are billed at a flat monthly rate of $200 per month, no matter the number of lessons in the month, to facilitate vital consistency.

*These rates apply to private Piano & Voice offerings conducted in my studio in Venice.

Introductory & Single Lessons are paid for at the time of scheduling.

Custom Project & Traveling Lesson rates are variable. Let’s talk about it!

  • I do!

Lesson Rates for students 65 and over: $86 per hour lesson, $66 per 45-minute lesson

Families who can demonstrate need should reach out. I’m happy to find a great solution!

  • Give me a call and we will work together to find a great time and day for the first lesson. I’m going to ask you some questions about the student’s age, experience, goals and availability. I’ll answer your questions, let you know where to find me and fill you in on what to expect from a first lesson.

You’ll pay for the lesson using a credit/debt card, I’ll send you an email confirmation and then we both get really excited about that upcoming first lesson!

  • Absolutely! I have 2 recitals per year, in early June & December. All students have the opportunity to share with friends and family what they have been working. They are very professional and also relaxed, inspiring, creative and most importantly, fun. Students have the option to perform with a group of pros (the band) and all music is played live! They are always great shows.

  • Generally, children as young as 4 are ready for private piano lessons. I use proven methodology specifically designed for early beginners. I began my teaching career specifically with young beginners (aged 4-6) and am an expert in teaching piano to this age group. Occasionally, I find that a child isn’t quite ready for lessons & I will give you a ton of direction about when I think they will be and how you can help.

Voice is a bit different and I prefer not to start singing lessons for kids until they are around 6 but it’s usually best to wait until they are around 9 years old. Notice I said “singing lessons,” and this is because until voice changes (around puberty) begin, that’s what they are. I help kids learn to sing safely, discover their own voice, have fun while singing and build confidence. Remember, the voice is part of our physical body and can be damaged if used or taught incorrectly! Just like lifting heavy weight is bad for kid’s bones, training the voice aggressively or incorrectly is bad for a kid’s voice.

True Voice Lessons can begin around ages 11 or 12. This is when it’s safe to work more seriously on technique and to begin to challenge and grow vocal range, ability and capacity. Safe singing is my highest priority here and students learn how to take care of their vocal health, use their voices wisely and make good choices about repertoire.

  • ABSOLUTELY. In fact, adults learn much more quickly than children do. We can “real talk” and also conceptualize concepts that children can’t yet. The biggest challenge for adults in lessons is time. But if you’re willing to learn and can make a little room in your life for practice (for piano especially), you’ll definitely learn a ton and grow as a musician/singer.

Anyone can sing. I’ll say that again. Anyone can sing. We are born with this instrument and I think that only somewhere between 2%-5% of the world population are actually tone deaf. So you probably aren’t. And though you might not sound like Aretha Franklin, remember that millions of people listen to Bob Dylan and Tom Waits (amazing communicators and songwriters with less than beautiful voices). Yes, you can sing and people will enjoy it if you can make them feel heard, seen and understood.

  • Yeah… You need to have a piano (digital or acoustic) or keyboard at home to make piano lessons effective and make any progress. If you don’t, I can help you find something that works within your budget and space requirements. Imagine how difficult it would be to learn to surf without a surfboard…

You don’t need to have a piano/keyboard for the first lesson. But we will need to work together to remedy that as quickly as possible!

  • Give me at least 24 hours notice and you’ll get to make up that lesson. Easy peasy. Sometimes we are able to simply reschedule for another time in the near future and other times, we will need to “bank” the lesson until schedules align. No refunds or credits toward future lessons are given for missed, cancelled or rescheduled lessons, with or without notice.

  • I teach consistent, high quality private music lessons as well as do everything in my power to support student growth, both as musicians & humans. Students agree to show up at their scheduled lessons on time & ready to learn & grow. They agree to give at least 24 hours notice if they can’t make their lesson & at least 30 days notice when they need to pause lessons.

  • I do play a variety of other instruments with varying degrees of proficiency.

I’ve played guitar for 30 years and will occasionally accept a beginning acoustic guitar student with total confidence that I can help the student learn the basics of the guitar. Once a student has outgrown me, I will recommend moving to one of the many amazing guitar teachers I know and respect and who I have taught with in the past. This goes for Ukulele as well!

I play a little drums, a little cello, a little bass etc… but I don’t teach any of them. Because I owned a local music school for 15 years, I have access to many amazing teachers and am happy to refer you to them for killer, professional lessons.
